Carl Hager 1902 – 1992
Today is Labor Day. Our nation has celebrated this holiday for more than 125 years. In fact, this national observance first took place September 5, 1882 in New York City. The purpose was to recognize the social and economic achievements of American workers.
When I think of the contributions of American workers, my mind goes back to my Dad. Carl Hager was one of the hardest working farmers I have ever known. Although his Lapeer County farm was small by the standards of today, he was able to provide a comfortable living for our family.
I will always be indebted to my Dad for instilling in me and my brothers a solid work ethic. He taught by example. Yes, he expected that we do our part in milking and feeding cows, baling hay, picking up stones, and other farm chores. But he was always at our sides, working with us.
Although Dad has been gone for about 15 years, the lessons I learned from him have never left me. He was an encourager, friend, teacher and a model of what it means to give a hard days work.
He taught us boys that organized labor meant working together to get the job done.
Thanks Dad

Lauren, although I do not live in either St Clair or Lapeer Counties, I do however remember your father, and you are correct. He was a very hard working man!!! He labored just like my father on Labor Day. It was just another Monday that we did not have school and we were expected to gather the crops, milk the cows, prepare the storage and even put the feed up in that storage for the winter, be it bale the hay or put up the silage. We did learn by example. I did enjoy your blog here and hopefully I can follow you even though I do not live in your jurisdiction.
Renee,
Thanks for your comment about my dad. If I remember correctly, your Dad’s name is Wendell? Please let me know if I have the right person. Lauren
